1. 1 다윗의 아들, 예루살렘 왕 선포자의 말씀들이라.

   1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2. 2 선포자가 말하노라. 헛되고 헛되며 헛되고 헛되니 모든 것이 헛되도다.

   2 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

3. 3 사람이 해 아래에서 행하는 자기의 모든 수고에서 무슨 유익을 얻으리오?

   3 What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?

4. 4 한 세대는 가고 다른 세대가 오되 땅은 영원히 있도다.

   4 A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains for ever.

5. 5 해는 또한 뜨고 해는 져서 자기 처소 곧 자기가 떴던 곳으로 속히 가고

   5 The sun rises and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.

6. 6 바람은 남쪽으로 가다가 북쪽으로 돌아가며 계속해서 빙빙 돌다가 자기의 순환 회로에 따라 다시 되돌아가고

   6 The wind blows to the south, and goes round to the north; round and round goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns.

7. 7 모든 강은 바다로 흐르되 여전히 바다를 채우지 못하며 강들은 자기들이 나오는 곳, 거기로 다시 되돌아가느니라.

   7 All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again.

8. 8 모든 것이 수고로 가득하여 사람이 그것을 말할 수 없나니 눈은 보는 것으로 만족하지 아니하고 귀는 듣는 것으로 채워지지 아니하느니라.

   8 All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9. 9 이미 있던 것, 바로 그것이 다시 있을 것이며 사람들이 이미 행한 것, 바로 그것을 다시 행하리니 해 아래에는 새것이 전혀 없도다.

   9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; and there is nothing new under the sun.

10. 10 혹시 사람들이, 보라, 이것은 새것이라, 하고 말할 수 있는 것이 있느냐? 그것은 우리가 있기 전에 이미 옛적부터 있었느니라.

    10 Is there a thing of which it is said, "See, this is new"? It has been already, in the ages before us.

11. 11 아무도 이전 것들을 기억하지 아니하며 다가올 것들도 뒤에 올 자들이 전혀 기억하지 아니하리라.

    11 There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to happen among those who come after.

12. 12 ¶ 나 선포자는 예루살렘에서 이스라엘을 다스리는 왕이 되었고

    12 I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13. 13 지혜를 써서 하늘 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일에 관하여 찾아보고 탐구하기 위해 내 마음을 쏟았는데 하나님께서는 이 쓰라린 해산의 고통을 사람의 아들들에게 주사 그것으로 단련받게 하셨느니라.

    13 And I applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to the sons of men to be busy with.

14. 14 내가 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일을 보았는데, 보라, 모든 것이 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이니라.

    14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

15. 15 구부러진 것을 곧게 할 수 없으며 모자라는 것을 셀 수 없도다.

    15 What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be numbered.

16. 16 내가 내 마음과 이야기를 나누며 이르기를, 보라, 내가 큰 지위에 올랐고 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 자들보다 더 많은 지혜를 얻었다, 하였나니 참으로 내 마음이 지혜와 지식의 큰 체험을 가졌느니라.

    16 I said to myself, "I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge."

17. 17 또 내가 지혜를 알며 미친 것과 어리석은 것을 알기 위해 내 마음을 쏟았으나 이것도 영을 괴롭게 하는 것인 줄 내가 깨달았노라.

    17 And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.

18. 18 지혜가 많으면 근심도 많나니 지식을 늘리는 자는 슬픔을 늘리느니라.

    18 For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
