1 하나님과 주 예수 그리스도의 종 야고보는 널리 흩어져 있는 열두 지파에게 인사하노라.
1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.

2 내 형제들아, 너희가 여러 가지 시험에 빠질 때에 그것을 다 기쁨으로 여기라.
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
-
3 너희 믿음의 단련이 인내를 이루는 줄 너희가 아느니라.
3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

4 오직 인내를 완전히 이루라. 이것은 너희가 완전하고 완벽하여 아무것도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라.
4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

5 너희 중에 어떤 사람이 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 너그러이 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라. 그러면 그분께서 그것을 그에게 주시리라.
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

6 그러나 그는 믿음으로 구하고 어떤 일에도 흔들리지 말라. 흔들리는 자는 마치 바람에 밀려 요동하는 바다 물결 같나니
6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

7 그 사람은 자기가 주께 무엇을 받으리라고 생각하지 말라.
7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord;

8 두 생각을 품은 사람은 자기의 모든 길에 안정이 없느니라.
8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

9 낮은 처지의 형제는 자기가 높아진 것을 기뻐하고
9 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position.

10 부유한 자는 자기가 낮아진 것을 기뻐할지니 이는 풀의 꽃과 같이 그가 사라질 것이기 때문이라.
10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower.

11 해가 뜨거운 열기와 함께 돋자마자 풀을 말리면 그것의 꽃이 떨어져 그것의 외형의 아름다움이 없어지나니 부유한 사람도 자기 길들에서 이와 같이 사라지리라.
11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.

12 시험을 견디는 사람은 복이 있나니 이는 그가 단련을 받은 뒤에 주께서 자신을 사랑하는 자들에게 약속하신 생명의 왕관을 받을 것이기 때문이라.
12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

13 아무도 자기가 시험을 받을 때에, 내가 하나님께 시험을 받고 있다, 하고 말하지 말라. 하나님께서는 악으로 시험을 받으실 수도 없고 친히 아무도 시험하지 아니하시느니라.
13 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

14 오히려 모든 사람은 자기 자신의 욕심에 이끌려 유혹을 받을 때에 시험을 받나니
14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.

15 그런즉 욕심이 잉태하면 죄를 낳고 죄가 완료되면 사망을 낳느니라.
15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

16 내 사랑하는 형제들아, 잘못을 범하지 말라.
16 Dont be deceived, my dear brothers.

17 모든 좋은 선물과 모든 완전한 선물은 위에서 오며 빛들의 아버지로부터 내려오는데 그분께는 변함도 없고 회전하는 그림자도 없느니라.
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

18 그분께서 자신의 뜻에 따라 진리의 말씀으로 우리를 낳으셨으니 이것은 우리가 그분의 창조물 중 첫 열매 종류가 되게 하려 하심이라.
18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

19 그러므로 내 사랑하는 형제들아, 사람마다 듣기는 빨리 하고 말하기는 더디 하며 진노하는 것도 더디 하라.
19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
-
20 이는 사람의 진노가 하나님의 의를 이루지 못하기 때문이니라.
20 for mans anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

21 그러므로 모든 더러움과 넘치는 악을 내버리고 접붙여진 말씀 곧 너희 혼을 구원할 수 있는 말씀을 온유함으로 받으라.
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

22 더욱이 너희는 말씀을 행하는 자가 되고 듣기만 하여 너희 자신을 속이는 자가 되지 말라.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

23 누구든지 말씀을 듣고 행하지 아니하는 자는 거울로 자기의 본래 얼굴을 바라보는 사람과 같으니
23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror

24 이는 그가 자기를 바라본 뒤 자기 길로 가서 자기가 어떤 사람이었는지 즉시 잊어버리기 때문이라.
24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

25 그러나 누구든지 자유롭게 하는 완전한 법을 들여다보며 그 안에 거하는 자는 듣고 잊어버리는 자가 아니요, 일을 행하는 자니 이 사람은 자기가 행하는 일에 복을 받으리라.
25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.

26 너희 가운데 어떤 사람이 신앙심이 있어 보이되 자기 혀를 제어하지 아니하고 자기 마음을 속이면 이 사람의 신앙 행위는 헛것이니라.
26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

27 하나님 곧 아버지 앞에서 순수하고 더럽지 않은 신앙 행위는 이것이니 즉 고난 중에 있는 아버지 없는 자들과 과부들을 찾아가고 세상으로부터 자기를 지켜 더럽혀지지 아니하는 것이니라.
27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
