1. 1 장로는 선택받은 부인과 그녀의 자녀들에게 편지하노라. 내가 진리 안에서 너희를 사랑하며 나뿐만 아니라 진리를 안 모든 자들도 그리함은

   1 The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth,

2. 2 우리 안에 거하며 영원토록 우리와 함께할 진리 때문이니라.

   2 because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us for ever:

3. 3 하나님 아버지와 아버지의 아들 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 긍휼과 화평이 진리와 사랑 안에서 너희와 함께 있기를 원하노라.

   3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Fathers Son, in truth and love.

4. 4 네 자녀들 중에 우리가 아버지께 명령을 받은 대로 진리 안에서 걷는 자들이 있음을 내가 보고 크게 기뻐하였노라.

   4 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children following the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father.

5. 5 부인이여, 내가 새 명령을 네게 쓰듯 하지 아니하고 우리가 처음부터 가진 것을 쓰면서 우리가 서로 사랑할 것을 이제 네게 간청하노라.

   5 And now I beg you, lady, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6. 6 사랑은 이것이니 곧 우리가 그분의 명령들을 따라 걷는 것이요, 명령은 이것이니 곧 너희가 처음부터 들은 대로 그것 안에서 걷는 것이니라.

   6 And this is love, that we follow his commandments; this is the commandment, as you have heard from the beginning, that you follow love.

7. 7 이는 속이는 자들이 세상에 많이 들어왔기 때문인데 그들은 예수 그리스도께서 육체 안에 오신 것을 시인하지 아니하느니라. 이런 자가 속이는 자요 적그리스도니라.

   7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, men who will not acknowledge the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh; such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

8. 8 너희 자신을 살펴서 우리가 이룬 그것들을 우리가 잃지 아니하고 충분한 보상을 받게 하라.

   8 Look to yourselves, that you may not lose what you have worked for, but may win a full reward.

9. 9 누구든지 범법하며 그리스도의 교리 안에 거하지 아니하는 자에게는 하나님이 없고 그리스도의 교리 안에 거하는 자에게는 아버지와 아들이 둘 다 있느니라.

   9 Any one who goes ahead and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God; he who abides in the doctrine has both the Father and the Son.

10. 10 어떤 사람이 너희에게 오면서 이 교리를 가져오지 아니하거든 그를 너희 집에 받아들이지 말고 그에게 축복 인사도 하지 말라.

    10 If any one comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into the house or give him any greeting;

11. 11 그에게 축복 인사를 하는 자는 그의 악한 행위들에 참여하는 자니라.

    11 for he who greets him shares his wicked work.

12. 12 내가 너희에게 쓸 것이 많지만 종이와 잉크로 쓰기를 원치 아니하며 너희에게 가서 얼굴을 마주 대하고 말하기를 바라노니 이것은 우리 기쁨이 충만하게 하려 함이라.

    12 Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink, but I hope to come to see you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

13. 13 너의 선택받은 자매의 자녀들이 네게 인사하느니라. 아멘.

    13 The children of your elect sister greet you.
