1. 1 한편 블레셋 사람들이 싸우기 위해 자기들의 군대를 함께 모으고 유다에 속한 소고에 함께 모여 소고와 아세가 사이에 있는 에베스담밈에 진을 치므로

   1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which [belongeth] to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

2. 2 사울과 이스라엘 사람들이 함께 모여 엘라 골짜기 옆에 진을 치고 블레셋 사람들을 마주 보며 전투 대형을 갖추니

   2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

3. 3 블레셋 사람들은 이쪽 산에 섰고 이스라엘은 저쪽 산에 섰으며 그들 사이에는 골짜기가 있더라.

   3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and [there was] a valley between them.

4. 4 ¶ 가드 출신으로 골리앗이라 하는 투사가 블레셋 사람들 진영에서 나오는데 그의 키는 육 큐빗 한 뼘이며

   4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height [was] six cubits and a span.

5. 5 그는 머리에 놋투구를 썼고 비늘 갑옷으로 무장하였는데 그 옷의 무게는 놋 오천 세겔이더라.

   5 And [he had] an helmet of brass upon his head, and he [was] armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat [was] five thousand shekels of brass.

6. 6 그가 다리에 놋으로 된 정강이 가리개를 찼고 자기 어깨 사이에 놋방패를 메었으며

   6 And [he had] greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

7. 7 그의 창 자루는 베틀 채 같았고 그의 창 촉의 무게는 쇠 육백 세겔이며 방패를 든 자가 그의 앞에서 가더라.

   7 And the staff of his spear [was] like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head [weighed] six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

8. 8 그가 서서 이스라엘 군대들을 향해 외치며 그들에게 이르되, 어찌하여 너희가 나와서 전투 대형을 갖추었느냐? 나는 블레셋 사람이 아니며 너희는 사울의 종들이 아니냐? 너희는 너희를 위해 한 사람을 택하고 그를 내게로 내려오게 하라.

   8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set [your] battle in array? [am] not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

9. 9 그가 나와 싸워 나를 죽일 수 있으면 우리가 너희 종이 될 것이나 만일 내가 그를 이겨 그를 죽이면 너희가 우리 종이 되어 우리를 섬길 것이니라, 하고

   9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

10. 10 또 그 블레셋 사람이 이르되, 내가 이날 이스라엘 군대들에 도전하노니 내게 사람을 내주어 우리가 서로 싸우게 하라, 하므로

    10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

11. 11 사울과 온 이스라엘이 그 블레셋 사람의 그 말들을 듣고는 놀라서 크게 두려워하니라.

    11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

12. 12 ¶ 한편 다윗은 베들레헴유다의 그 에브랏 사람 곧 이새라는 이름을 가진 사람의 아들이었는데 그에게는 여덟 아들이 있었고 그 사람은 사울 시대에 사람들 가운데서 늙은 사람으로 통하였더라.

    12 Now David [was] the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name [was] Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men [for] an old man in the days of Saul.

13. 13 이새의 가장 나이 많은 세 아들이 가서 사울을 따라 싸움터로 나갔는데 싸움터로 나간 그의 세 아들의 이름은 맏아들이 엘리압이요, 그 다음은 아비나답이요, 셋째는 삼마이며

    13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went [and] followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle [were] Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14. 14 다윗은 막내더라. 가장 나이 많은 세 명은 사울을 따라갔으나

    14 And David [was] the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.

15. 15 다윗은 갔다가 사울에게서 돌아와 베들레헴에서 자기 아버지의 양들을 먹이더라.

    15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

16. 16 그 블레셋 사람이 아침저녁으로 사십 일 동안 가까이 와서 모습을 나타내었더라.

    16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17. 17 이새가 자기 아들 다윗에게 이르되, 이제 네 형들을 위해 이 볶은 곡식 일 에바와 이 빵 열 개를 가지고 진영에 있는 네 형들에게 달려가

    17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched [corn], and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

18. 18 이 치즈 열 개를 그들의 천인 대장에게 가져다주고 네 형들이 어떻게 지내는지 살펴본 뒤 그들의 증거물을 가져오라, 하였는데

    18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of [their] thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

19. 19 당시 사울과 그들과 이스라엘 모든 사람들은 엘라 골짜기에서 블레셋 사람들과 싸우는 중이었더라.

    19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, [were] in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20. 20 ¶ 다윗이 아침에 일찍 일어나 양 지키는 자에게 양들을 맡긴 뒤 이새가 자기에게 명령한 대로 가지고 가서 참호에 다다랐을 때에 군대가 싸우러 나가려 하면서 전투를 위해 소리를 질렀으니

    20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

21. 21 이는 이스라엘과 블레셋 사람들이 전투 대형을 갖추고 군대와 군대가 대항하였기 때문이더라.

    21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.

22. 22 다윗이 자기 짐을 짐 지키는 자의 손에 맡기고 군대로 달려가 자기 형들에게 가서 문안하며

    22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

23. 23 그들과 말할 때에, 보라, 블레셋 사람들의 군대들에서 가드 출신의 블레셋 사람 곧 골리앗이라 하는 투사가 올라와 똑같은 말들로 말하매 다윗이 그 말들을 들으니라.

    23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard [them].

24. 24 이스라엘 모든 사람들이 그 사람을 보고 그 앞에서 도망하며 심히 두려워하였고

    24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

25. 25 또 이스라엘 사람들이 이르되, 올라온 이 사람을 너희가 보았느냐? 참으로 그가 이스라엘에게 도전하려고 올라왔도다. 그를 죽이는 사람은 왕께서 큰 재물로 부유하게 하고 자기 딸을 그에게 주며 그의 아버지 집을 이스라엘 안에서 자유롭게 하시리라, 하였더라.

    25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, [that] the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

26. 26 다윗이 자기 옆에 서 있는 사람들에게 말하여 이르되, 이 블레셋 사람을 죽여 이스라엘에게서 치욕을 제거하는 사람은 무슨 대우를 받겠느냐? 이 할례받지 않은 블레셋 사람이 누구이기에 그가 살아 계시는 하나님의 군대들에 도전하느냐? 하니

    26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who [is] this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

27. 27 백성이 이런 식으로 그에게 대답하여 이르되, 그를 죽이는 사람은 이러한 대우를 받으리라, 하니라.

    27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

28. 28 ¶ 그가 그 사람들에게 말할 때에 그의 맏형 엘리압이 들었으므로 엘리압의 분노가 다윗을 향해 타올라 엘리압이 이르되, 네가 어찌하여 이리 내려왔느냐? 광야에 있는 몇 안 되는 그 양들을 네가 누구에게 맡겼느냐? 네 교만과 네 마음의 무례함을 내가 아노니 네가 전쟁을 구경하려고 내려왔도다, 하매

    28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

29. 29 다윗이 이르되, 내가 지금 무엇을 하였나이까? 이유가 있지 아니하니이까? 하고

    29 And David said, What have I now done? [Is there] not a cause?

30. 30 ¶ 그에게서 돌아서서 다른 사람을 향해 같은 식으로 말하매 백성이 전과 같은 식으로 다시 그에게 대답하니라.

    30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31. 31 다윗이 한 말들을 사람들이 듣고 그것들을 사울 앞에 다시 말하였으므로 사울이 그를 부르니

    31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed [them] before Saul: and he sent for him.

32. 32 ¶ 다윗이 사울에게 이르되, 그로 인해 아무도 낙담하지 말게 하소서. 당신의 종이 가서 이 블레셋 사람과 싸우리이다, 하매

    32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

33. 33 사울이 다윗에게 이르되, 네가 이 블레셋 사람을 대적하여 그와 싸우려고 갈 수 없나니 너는 단지 소년이나 그는 어려서부터 전사이니라, 하므로

    33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou [art but] a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

34. 34 다윗이 사울에게 이르되, 당신의 종이 자기 아버지의 양들을 지킬 때에 사자와 곰이 와서 양 떼에서 어린양을 움켜 가면

    34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35. 35 내가 그것을 따라 나가서 그것을 치고 그것의 입에서 그 양을 구출하였으며 그것이 나를 대적하여 일어나면 내가 그것의 수염을 잡고 그것을 쳐서 죽였나이다.

    35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered [it] out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught [him] by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36. 36 당신의 종이 사자와 곰을 죽였으니 살아 계시는 하나님의 군대들에 도전한 이 할례받지 않은 블레셋 사람도 그것들 중 하나와 같이 되리이다, 하고

    36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37. 37 다윗이 또 이르되, 나를 사자의 발톱과 곰의 발톱에서 구출하신 주, 그분께서 나를 이 블레셋 사람의 손에서 구출하시리이다, 하니 사울이 다윗에게 이르되, 가라. 주께서 너와 함께 계시기를 원하노라, 하니라.

    37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

38. 38 ¶ 사울이 자기 갑옷으로 다윗을 무장시키고 놋투구를 그의 머리에 씌워 주며 또한 비늘 갑옷으로 그를 무장시키매

    38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

39. 39 다윗이 그의 칼을 그의 갑옷 위에 차고는 그것을 시험해 본 적이 없으므로 시험 삼아 걸어 보다가 사울에게 이르되, 내가 이것들을 시험해 본 적이 없으므로 그것들을 입고 갈 수 없나이다, 한 뒤 그것들을 벗고

    39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved [it]. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved [them]. And David put them off him.

40. 40 손에 자기 지팡이를 들고 시내에서 매끄러운 돌 다섯 개를 골라 자기가 지닌 목자의 자루 곧 짐 보따리에 그것들을 넣은 뒤 손에 자기 무릿매를 가지고 그 블레셋 사람에게 가까이 가니라.

    40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling [was] in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

41. 41 그 블레셋 사람이 나와서 다윗에게 가까이 오는데 방패를 든 사람이 그 사람 앞에서 가더라.

    41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield [went] before him.

42. 42 그 블레셋 사람이 둘러보다가 다윗을 보고 그를 업신여겼으니 이는 그가 단지 소년이며 혈색이 좋고 용모가 아름다웠기 때문이더라.

    42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was [but] a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43. 43 그 블레셋 사람이 다윗에게 이르되, 내가 개냐, 그래서 네가 막대기들을 가지고 내게 오느냐? 하고는 자기 신들을 두고 다윗을 저주한 뒤

    43 And the Philistine said unto David, [Am] I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44. 44 그 블레셋 사람이 다윗에게 이르되, 내게 오라. 내가 네 살을 공중의 날짐승들과 들의 짐승들에게 주리라, 하므로

    44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45. 45 이에 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람에게 이르되, 너는 칼과 창과 방패를 가지고 내게 오지만 나는 네가 도전한 이스라엘 군대들의 하나님 곧 군대들의 주의 이름으로 네게 가노라.

    45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46. 46 이날 주께서 너를 내 손에 넘겨주시리니 내가 너를 쳐서 네게서 네 머리를 취하고 또 이날 블레셋 사람들 군대의 사체를 공중의 날짐승들과 땅의 들짐승들에게 주어 이스라엘에 하나님이 계신 줄 온 땅이 알게 할 것이며

    46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47. 47 또 주께서 칼이나 창으로 구원하지 아니하심을 여기 모인 이 모든 자들이 알게 하리라. 전쟁은 주께 속한 것이므로 그분께서 너희를 우리 손에 넘겨주시리라, 하니라.

    47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle [is] the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.

48. 48 그 블레셋 사람이 일어나 나오며 다윗을 맞으러 가까이 올 때에 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람을 맞으러 군대 쪽으로 재빨리 달려가면서

    48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

49. 49 손을 자루에 넣어 거기서 돌을 꺼낸 뒤 무릿매로 그것을 던져 그 블레셋 사람의 이마를 치매 그 돌이 그의 이마에 박혀 그가 얼굴을 땅에 대고 쓰러지니라.

    49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang [it], and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

50. 50 이렇게 다윗이 무릿매와 돌로 그 블레셋 사람을 이기고 그 블레셋 사람을 쳐서 죽였으나 다윗의 손에는 칼이 없었으므로

    50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but [there was] no sword in the hand of David.

51. 51 다윗이 달려가 그 블레셋 사람을 밟고 서서 그의 칼을 잡고는 칼집에서 그것을 빼내어 그것으로 그를 죽이고 그의 머리를 베니 블레셋 사람들이 자기들의 투사가 죽은 것을 보고 도망하니라.

    51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

52. 52 이에 이스라엘과 유다 사람들이 일어나 소리를 지르며 블레셋 사람들을 쫓아가서 네가 골짜기와 에그론 성문들에 다다르듯이 마침내 거기에 다다랐으며 블레셋 사람들의 상한 자들이 사아라임으로 가는 길 곧 가드와 에그론으로 가는 길에 쓰러졌더라.

    52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

53. 53 이스라엘 자손이 블레셋 사람들을 쫓다가 돌아와 그들의 장막들을 노략하였고

    53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.

54. 54 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람의 머리를 취해 예루살렘으로 가져갔으나 그의 병기는 자기 장막에 두었더라.

    54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

55. 55 ¶ 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람을 향해 나아감을 사울이 보고 군대 대장 아브넬에게 이르되, 아브넬아, 이 소년이 누구의 아들이냐? 하매 아브넬이 이르되, 오 왕이여, 왕의 혼이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하지만 내가 알 수 없나이다, 하매

    55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son [is] this youth? And Abner said, [As] thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

56. 56 왕이 이르되, 너는 이 젊은이가 누구의 아들인지 물어보라, 하였더라.

    56 And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling [is].

57. 57 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람을 살육하고 돌아올 때에 아브넬이 그를 데려다가 사울 앞으로 인도하였는데 그의 손에 그 블레셋 사람의 머리가 있더라.

    57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58. 58 사울이 그에게 이르되, 젊은이여, 너는 누구의 아들이냐? 하니 다윗이 대답하되, 나는 당신의 종 베들레헴 사람 이새의 아들이니이다, 하니라.

    58 And Saul said to him, Whose son [art] thou, [thou] young man? And David answered, [I am] the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
