1. 1 그러므로 내가 되돌아와 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 압제를 깊이 살펴보았는데, 보라, 압제받는 자들이 눈물을 흘리되 그들에게 위로자가 없었도다. 그들의 압제자들 편에는 권세가 있었으나 그들에게는 위로자가 없었도다.

   1 Again I saw all the oppressions that are practiced under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.

2. 2 그러므로 내가 아직 생존해 있는 살아 있는 자들보다 이미 죽어 있는 죽은 자들을 더욱 칭송하였으니

   2 And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive;

3. 3 참으로 아직 존재하지 않은 자 곧 해 아래에서 이루어진 악한 일을 보지 못한 자가 그들 둘보다 낫도다.

   3 but better than both is he who has not yet been, and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

4. 4 ¶ 내가 모든 해산의 고통과 모든 옳은 일을 다시 깊이 살펴보았는데 이것으로 인해 사람이 자기 이웃에게 시기를 받나니 이것도 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이니라.

   4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a mans envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

5. 5 어리석은 자는 자기 손들을 함께 포개고 자기 살을 먹느니라.

   5 The fool folds his hands, and eats his own flesh.

6. 6 한 움큼을 가지고 평온히 지내는 것이 두 손을 가득 채우고 해산의 고통을 겪으며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것보다 더 나으니라.

   6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.

7. 7 ¶ 그때에 내가 되돌아와 해 아래에서 헛된 것을 보았노라.

   7 Again, I saw vanity under the sun:

8. 8 한 사람이 홀로 있고 대신할 자가 없으니 참으로 그는 자식도 없고 형제도 없지만 그럼에도 그의 모든 수고에는 끝이 없고 그의 눈은 재물로도 만족하지 아니하며 그가 이르기를, 내가 누구를 위해 수고하고 내 혼에게서 좋은 것을 빼앗는가? 하지도 아니하나니 이것도 헛되며 참으로 쓰라린 해산의 고통이니라.

   8 a person who has no one, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, "For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?" This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

9. 9 ¶ 두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 자기들의 수고로 인해 좋은 보상을 받기 때문이라.

   9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.

10. 10 혹시 그들이 넘어지면 한 사람이 자기 동료를 일으켜 세우겠지만 홀로 있는 자는 넘어질 때에 화가 있으리니 이는 그를 도와서 일으킬 다른 자가 그에게 없기 때문이라.

    10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up.

11. 11 또 두 사람이 함께 누우면 그들이 따뜻하게 되지만 사람이 어찌 홀로 따뜻할 수 있으리오?

    11 Again, if two lie together, they are warm; but how can one be warm alone?

12. 12 어떤 사람이 그를 쳐서 이기면 두 사람이 그 사람과 맞서리니 세 겹 줄은 빨리 끊어지지 아니하느니라.

    12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

13. 13 ¶ 가난해도 지혜로운 아이가 늙고 어리석어 더 이상 권고를 받지 아니하려 하는 왕보다 나으니

    13 Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who will no longer take advice,

14. 14 그 이유는 그 아이는 통치하려고 감옥에서 나오지만 자기 왕권을 가지고 태어난 자는 또한 가난하게 되기 때문이라.

    14 even though he had gone from prison to the throne or in his own kingdom had been born poor.

15. 15 내가 그를 대신하여 일어설 둘째 아이와 함께 해 아래에서 걷고 있는 모든 살아 있는 자들을 깊이 살펴보았는데

    15 I saw all the living who move about under the sun, as well as that youth, who was to stand in his place;

16. 16 모든 백성들의 끝이 없고 참으로 그들 전에 있던 모든 자들의 끝도 없으며 뒤에 오는 자들도 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리니 분명히 이것도 헛되며 영을 괴롭게 하는 것이니라.

    16 there was no end of all the people; he was over all of them. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
