1 누가 지혜로운 사람과 같으냐? 누가 사물에 대한 해석을 아느냐? 사람의 지혜는 그의 얼굴을 빛나게 하나니 이로써 그의 얼굴의 뻔뻔함이 변하리라.
1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A mans wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his countenance is changed.

2 내가 네게 권고하노니 왕의 명령을 지키되 하나님께 맹세한 것으로 인해 그것을 지키라.
2 Keep the kings command, and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed;

3 그의 눈앞에서 벗어나려고 서두르지 말며 악한 것 가운데 서지 말라. 그는 무엇이든지 자기가 기뻐하는 것을 행하느니라.
3 go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases.

4 왕의 말씀이 있는 곳에 권능이 있나니 누가 그에게 이르기를, 왕께서 무엇을 하시나이까? 할 수 있느냐?
4 For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, "What are you doing?"

5 누구든지 명령을 지키는 자는 악한 일을 당하지 아니하리니 지혜로운 사람의 마음은 때와 판단을 분별하느니라.
5 He who obeys a command will meet no harm, and the mind of a wise man will know the time and way.

6 ¶ 모든 목적한 것에는 때와 판단이 있기에 그런 까닭으로 사람의 불행이 그에게 크게 닥치나니
6 For every matter has its time and way, although mans trouble lies heavy upon him.

7 이는 그가 앞으로 있을 것을 알지 못하기 때문이라. 언제 그 일이 있을지 누가 그에게 말할 수 있느냐?
7 For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be?

8 영을 다스릴 권능이 있어 영을 머무르게 할 사람이 아무도 없고 사람은 죽는 날에 권능을 소유하지도 못하며 그 전쟁에서는 면제받는 일도 전혀 없나니 사악함도 자기에게 넘겨진 자들을 구출하지 못하리라.
8 No man has power to retain the spirit, or authority over the day of death; there is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it.

9 내가 이 모든 것을 보며 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일에 내 마음을 기울여 알아보았는데 한 사람이 다른 사람을 다스리면서 자기를 해치는 때가 있느니라.
9 All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while man lords it over man to his hurt.

10 이렇게 내가 사악한 자들이 묻히는 것을 보았는데 그들은 왔다가 거룩한 자의 처소를 떠났으며 자기들이 그렇게 행한 도시에서 잊혔나니 이것도 헛되도다.
10 Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.

11 악한 일에 대한 판결이 신속히 집행되지 아니하므로 그런 까닭에 사람들의 아들들의 마음이 악을 행하려고 그들의 속에서 완전히 고정되어 있느니라.
11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil.

12 ¶ 비록 죄인이 백 번 악을 행하고 그의 날들이 길게 된다 할지라도 나는 하나님을 두려워하는 자들 곧 그분 앞에서 두려워하는 자들의 일이 잘될 줄을 확실히 아노라.
12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him;

13 그러나 사악한 자의 일은 잘되지 못할 것이며 그는 자기 날들을 길게 하지 못하겠고 그날들은 그림자와 같으리니 이는 그가 하나님 앞에서 두려워하지 아니하기 때문이라.
13 but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.

14 땅에서 이루어진 헛된 것이 있나니 곧 의로운 자들이 있는데 그들에게 사악한 자들의 행위에 걸맞은 일이 일어나며 또 한편 사악한 자들이 있는데 그들에게 의로운 자들의 행위에 걸맞은 일이 일어나는 것이라. 그래서 이것도 헛되다고 내가 말하였노라.
14 There is a vanity which takes place on earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

15 이에 내가 희락을 권하였노니 이는 먹고 마시고 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 해 아래에서 사람에게 없기 때문이라. 하나님께서 해 아래에서 그에게 주시는 그의 삶의 날들에 이루어진 그의 수고의 산물 중에서 그것이 그와 함께 남으리라.
15 And I commend enjoyment, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink, and enjoy himself, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of life which God gives him under the sun.

16 ¶ 내가 내 마음을 기울여 지혜를 알려고 하였으며 땅에서 이루어진 일을 보려고 하였나니 (이는 낮이나 밤이나 자기 눈으로 잠을 보지 못하는 자도 있기 때문이라.)
16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night ones eyes see sleep;

17 그때에 내가 하나님의 모든 일을 눈여겨보고 해 아래에서 이루어진 일을 사람이 알아낼 수 없음을 알았으니 이는 사람이 수고하여 그것을 찾아내려 할지라도 발견할 수 없기 때문이라. 또 참으로 지혜로운 자가 그것을 알려고 생각할지라도 그것을 발견할 수 없으리라.
17 then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out; even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out.
