1. 1 그러므로 모든 악의와 모든 교활함과 위선과 시기와 모든 비방하는 말을 버리고

   1 So put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander.

2. 2 새로 태어난 아기들로서 말씀의 순전한 젖을 사모하라. 이것은 너희가 그 젖으로 말미암아 성장하게 하려 함이라.

   2 Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation;

3. 3 주께서 은혜로우신 것을 너희가 맛보았으면 그리하라.

   3 for you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.

4. 4 참으로 사람들에게는 거부당하였으나 하나님께는 선정받은 돌 곧 보배로운 산 돌이신 그분께 와서

   4 Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in Gods sight chosen and precious;

5. 5 너희도 살아 있는 돌들로서 영적 집으로 건축되고 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님께서 받으실 만한 영적 희생물을 드리는 거룩한 제사장이 되었도다.

   5 and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

6. 6 그러므로 성경기록에, 보라, 내가 선택한 보배로운 으뜸 모퉁잇돌을 시온에 두노니 그를 믿는 자는 당황하지 아니하리라, 하시는 말씀이 또한 들어 있느니라.

   6 For it stands in scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame."

7. 7 그러므로 믿는 너희에게는 그분께서 보배로우시나 불순종하는 자들에게는 건축자들이 거부한 그 돌이 되셨느니라. 바로 그 돌이 모퉁이의 머리가 되고

   7 To you therefore who believe, he is precious, but for those who do not believe, "The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner,"

8. 8 불순종하여 말씀에 걸려 넘어지는 바로 그자들에게 걸림돌과 걸려 넘어지게 하는 반석이 되셨는데 그들은 또한 그렇게 되도록 정하여졌느니라.

   8 and "A stone that will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall"; for they stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

9. 9 그러나 너희는 선정된 세대요 왕가의 제사장이요 거룩한 민족이요 특별 소유 백성이니 이것은 너희를 어둠에서 불러내어 자신의 놀라운 빛으로 들어가게 하신 분에 대한 찬양을 너희가 전하게 하려 함이라.

   9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, Gods own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

10. 10 너희가 지나간 때에는 백성이 아니었으나 이제는 하나님의 백성이요 긍휼을 얻지 못하였으나 이제는 긍휼을 얻었느니라.

    10 Once you were no people but now you are Gods people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy.

11. 11 극진히 사랑하는 자들아, 내가 나그네와 순례자인 너희에게 간청하노니 혼을 대적하여 싸우는 육체의 정욕들을 삼가라.

    11 Beloved, I beseech you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul.

12. 12 이방인들 가운데서 너희 행실을 정직하게 하라. 이것은 그들이 너희더러 악을 행하는 자라고 비방하다가도 자기들이 바라볼 너희의 선한 행위들로 인해 주께서 찾아오시는 날에 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려 함이라.

    12 Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that in case they speak against you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

13. 13 주를 위해 사람의 모든 규례에 복종하되 왕에게는 최고 권위자에게 하듯 하고

    13 Be subject for the Lords sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,

14. 14 총독들에게는 악을 행하는 자를 징벌하고 잘 행하는 자를 칭찬하기 위해 그가 보낸 자들에게 하듯 하라.

    14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right.

15. 15 그리함이 하나님의 뜻이니 이것은 너희가 잘 행함으로 어리석은 사람들의 무지함에 재갈을 물리게 하려 함이니라.

    15 For it is Gods will that by doing right you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.

16. 16 너희가 자유로우나 너희의 자유를 악을 덮는 덮개로 쓰지 말고 오히려 하나님의 종들로서 행하라.

    16 Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God.

17. 17 모든 사람들을 존경하고 형제들을 사랑하며 하나님을 두려워하고 왕을 존경하라.

    17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

18. 18 종들아, 모든 두려움을 가지고 너희 주인들에게 복종하되 선하고 부드러운 자들에게뿐만 아니라 까다로운 자들에게도 그리하라.

    18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to the kind and gentle but also to the overbearing.

19. 19 사람이 부당하게 고난당하고도 하나님을 의식함으로 고통을 견디면 이것은 감사할 일이나

    19 For one is approved if, mindful of God, he endures pain while suffering unjustly.

20. 20 너희가 너희 잘못으로 인해 매를 맞고 참으면 그것이 무슨 영광이냐? 그러나 너희가 잘 행하다가 그것으로 인해 고난당하면서도 끈기 있게 그것을 견디면 이것은 하나님께서 받으실 만한 것이니라.

    20 For what credit is it, if when you do wrong and are beaten for it you take it patiently? But if when you do right and suffer for it you take it patiently, you have Gods approval.

21. 21 바로 그 일을 위해 너희가 부르심을 받았나니 그리스도께서도 우리를 위해 고난을 당하심으로 우리에게 본을 남기사 너희가 자신의 발자취를 따라오게 하셨느니라.

    21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

22. 22 그분께서는 죄를 짓지 아니하시고 입에 교활함도 없으셨으며

    22 He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips.

23. 23 욕을 당하시되 맞대어 욕하지 아니하시고 고난을 당하시되 위협하지 아니하셨으며 오히려 의롭게 심판하시는 분께 자신을 맡기시고

    23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly.

24. 24 친히 나무에 달려 자신의 몸으로 우리 죄들을 지셨으니 이것은 죄들을 향해 죽은 우리가 의를 향해 살게 하려 하심이라. 그분께서 채찍에 맞음으로 너희가 고침을 받았나니

    24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

25. 25 너희가 전에는 길 잃은 양 같았으나 지금은 너희 혼의 목자요 감독이신 분께 돌아왔느니라.

    25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
